The Wildset Hotel in St. Michaels, Maryland transforms four 19th-century buildings into a modern hospitality destination that honors their historic character while embracing sustainability & community. The property was reconfigured from 20 to 34 guest rooms without expanding its footprint, while adding the Ruse Restaurant, sundries shop & outdoor gathering spaces. Careful restoration addressed structural deficiencies and preserved original features, while energy-efficient upgrades and future-ready adaptability ensure the hotel will remain a welcoming community hub for generations.
Located in the heart of the St. Michaels Historic District, The Wildset Hotel is a reimagined hospitality destination composed of four nineteenth-century buildings. Originally converted from residences to bed and breakfast inns in the late 1980s and last renovated in the early 2000s, the property had become dated and disjointed. The new ownership team sought to transform the tired complex into a vibrant modern Eastern Shore experience while honoring the historic character of the buildings. Without expanding the footprint, the hotel was reconfigured from 20 guest rooms to 34 with accessibility, energy conservation, structural integrity and community engagement as guiding priorities. The John S. Hambleton House, once a community school and later a residence, contains the majority of guest rooms along with a sundries shop and the new Ruse Restaurant. A former underutilized spa and pool area was redeveloped into the restaurant, designed to welcome both visitors and locals. Given its proximity to guest rooms, extensive soundproofing measures were incorporated into walls and ceilings to minimize impact. The reconfiguration of the second floor added seven guest rooms while preserving the building’s historic fabric. On the west side of the complex, three late 19th century houses, the Watson Meeds House, the Alfred H. Hambleton House and the Kirby Thomas House, were carefully restored. These structures presented challenges such as deteriorating brick, unstable chimneys and inefficient layouts. Structural deficiencies were repaired, brickwork restored for long-term stability and interiors reorganized to create seven additional guest rooms. Many rooms highlight original features such as exposed brick walls, vaulted ceilings and expansive views enhanced with curated design elements like custom fireplaces, wide oak plank floors and vintage-meets-modern furnishings. The Wildset is more than a hotel. It is a hub for community and connection.
