Overview
This K-8 school’s expansion and renovation transformed it into a vibrant hub for learning and community life. The project added a new gymnasium with stage, a state-of-the-art STEM suite, music rooms, an art room, and more, while reimagining existing spaces like the library and early learning areas. Flexible, technology-rich environments, outdoor learning spaces, and safety upgrades support 21st-century education. Bold new architecture and dedicated community facilities ensure the school will serve generations to come.
This K-8 school, part of a single-school district, underwent a transformative expansion and renovation to address growing enrollment, modernize aging facilities, and create inspiring environments for 21st-century learning. The project reimagines the school as both an academic leader and a community hub: open, flexible, and designed to serve generations of students. A Need for Expansion A key driver for expansion was the need for separate spaces for athletics and music. The existing gym was shared between the two, limiting scheduling and program growth. The solution: a new gymnasium, equal in size to the original, equipped with a stage directly connected to the music, orchestra, and band rooms. A discreet ramp links the music spaces to the stage, supporting performances and community events. In the music rooms, lofted ceilings, acoustical treatments, and increased instrument storage elevate the school’s robust music program. The STEM Suite At the heart of the addition is the STEM suite, designed to spark curiosity and empower student-led learning. Two STEM labs sit side-by-side, connected to an open commons area anchored by a radial learning stair beneath skylights. The stair, with pendant lights designed to appear as if dancing in mid-air, offers a gathering space unlike any traditional classroom. And in the STEM labs, flexible furniture, open prep rooms, abundant glass, and advanced technology, including document cameras and multiple teaching walls, support both hands-on experimentation and collaborative projects. Space limitations inspired a dynamic layout that “fans out” from the commons.
