Overview

This renovation project creates a vibrant hub of innovation to highlight the work of a nationally ranked program and help recruit even more talented students to its ranks. The lab provides flexibility for its diverse users through the use of foldable whiteboard partitions, as well as mobile power stations, monitors, and furniture. Existing rooms were reconfigured and large expanses of glass were added to showcase the program activities and design elements of the space.

To support a nationally ranked academic program, our team collaborated with the client to design a dynamic, high- tech learning environment that highlights innovation, flexibility, and visibility. The project involved a strategic renovation of an existing third-floor space, transforming a previously isolated lab into a vibrant showcase near the building’s central atrium. The design focuses on showcasing the energy and success of the program. To increase visibility and engagement, the lab entrance was relocated near the main circulation atrium. Interior glass walls now offer clear views into the space, transforming it into a visual centerpiece. The corridor was widened to enhance sightlines, while a large video display shares program highlights and student accomplishments. Striking light fixtures draw attention and naturally leads visitors toward the lab, reinforcing its role as an active and innovative destination. Flexibility was a key goal. The lab features foldable, mobile whiteboard partitions with dual-sided writing surfaces and integrated acoustic panels to support sound control and collaboration. Mobile monitors, reconfigurable furniture, and abundant access to power and data allow the space to adapt to a wide variety of teaching methods and curricula. Student desks include integrated monitor cabinets, enabling screens to retract when not in use to create a clean, multipurpose work surface. Sustainability was thoughtfully integrated into the project through careful material selection and reuse strategies. Interior finishes include low- or no-VOC paints, recyclable luxury vinyl tile installed with water-based adhesives, and carbon-neutral carpet tiles affixed without traditional adhesives. Magnetic whiteboard wallcoverings were specified to be PVC-, DEHP-, and PFOA-free, and a full-height wall graphic printed with UV-LED, low-VOC inks is UL GREENGUARD Gold Certified and 50% naturally derived. Much of the removed ceiling tile was salvaged for reuse elsewhere on campus, while existing ceiling grid and tile were retained wherever possible to reduce construction waste.
