Island Chapel

The image is simple and the syntax is readily understood. All of villages near and along this lake in northern Minnesota are home to a white chapel. It is a reference. A reminder, and a comfort. The gothic arches speak of a rural creed. The steepled crescendo calls out to all. This chapel, however, is not like the others. It doesn’t rest on an idyllic street It doesn’t have a neighborhood or an address. The rhythm of timber members rests on a platform formed directly on the rock island. It is a destination on a foot path. It is a marker. A guide. It speaks of shelter but doesn’t challenge the elements. It will provoke questions. It will evoke feelings.
