It is more than a crossing - it is a SEED FOR VIBRANT PUBLIC LIFE. A gateway to and from the city, it creates distinct vistas and experience.
The Illinois Medical District (IMD) Pedestrian Bridge: A Meaningful Urban Connector The proposed pedestrian bridge creates a VITAL URBAN LINK across the major expressway I-290, uniting the north and south sides in a corridor rich with history, culture, and innovation. It will connect the historic Cook County Hospital, Rush University Medical Center, Malcolm X College, the United Center, the Blackhawks Arena, and future developments, while anchoring the district with a safe, protected, and memorable walkway. The design envisions more than a crossing - it is a SEED FOR VIBRANT PUBLIC LIFE. The covered path will integrate overlooks, landscaped green spaces, and visual focal points, creating a distinctive pedestrian experience. Direct access to the CTA Blue Line station will strengthen transit-oriented growth, while safe bike lanes will extend the reach of Chicago’s expanding cycling network. The bridge also carries deep SOCIAL SIGNIFICANCE. Communities long divided by the expressway will be reunited, giving economically disadvantaged neighborhoods to the north and south a direct link to the Medical District and its employment opportunities.
