Overview
Our team led the master planning and architectural design of GPMTD’s CityLink Maintenance and Operations Center, replacing one of Illinois’ oldest bus maintenance facilities. Through a phased, sustainable approach, the team overcame complex site constraints to deliver a modern, efficient campus. The final design integrates solar energy, supports electric bus operations, and enhances user experience, contributing a bold civic presence and ensuring uninterrupted transit service for decades to come.
Our team led master planning and architectural design for the complete redevelopment of GPMTD’s CityLink Maintenance and Operations Center, replacing one of the oldest bus maintenance facilities in Illinois. Envisioned as a sustainable, phased transformation of aging infrastructure, the multi-year, $43 million project delivers modernized facilities while maintaining uninterrupted transit operations. This was achieved through thoughtful collaboration and strategic construction sequencing. Several constraints challenged the existing 50-year-old maintenance facility and the surrounding site. These included a floodplain to the south, 20-foot grade differentials to the west and north, and an immovable central fuel island. Given the complex site conditions, the design team reimagined the maintenance garage on its original footprint, embedding flexibility and phasing strategies to maintain full operational continuity throughout construction. The design strategically integrated existing structures with remaining service life, preserving functional assets while ensuring a cohesive, modern campus.
