Overview
completed Phase II of the Greater Chicago Food Depository’s Nourish Project—an expansion that significantly increases meal production for vulnerable populations. The design supports the Food Depository’s mission through inclusive, sustainable solutions and integrated environmental branding. From culturally tailored meals to rotating art by local artists, the space strengthens community connections while achieving LEED Silver certification. This impactful project reflects how thoughtful design can advance equity, dignity, and nourishment for all.
In 2024, completed Phase II of the Greater Chicago Food Depository’s (The Food Depository) Nourish Project, expanding their capacity to provide nutritious meals to those at risk of hunger. This $40 million, 38,000-square-foot expansion includes Chicago’s Community Kitchens, now capable of producing up to 10,000 meals daily for vulnerable populations such as older adults, people with disabilities, and those on medically tailored diets. At the heart of the project is The Food Depository’s mission to promote food equity through culturally relevant, accessible meals. The Food Depository’s continued growth reflects its deep commitment to addressing hunger throughout Chicagoland. Phase II allows the organization to better meet rising demand, including support for asylum-seekers in shelters across the city. By collaborating with 17 minority-owned restaurants, The Food Depository not only increases meal output but also supports local businesses and strengthens historically disinvested communities— creating jobs and meaningful social impact. Partners by Design was charged with creating a space that embodies The Food Depository’s values while enabling operational efficiency and community connection. The design supports The Food Depository’s mission through thoughtful, inclusive, and sustainable elements. Key features include a redesigned food processing and packing area that now facilitates the production of prepared meals daily, many of which are culturally tailored or meet specific dietary needs. The expansion ensures these meals are not only nourishing but also respectful of the region’s diversity. Sustainability played a central role in the project. Achieving LEED Silver certification, the facility integrates native plantings, retention ponds for stormwater management, and outdoor garden spaces that serve as both educational tools and peaceful retreats for staff and volunteers. These green features reduce environmental impact while promoting wellness and community pride. Environmental branding, designed in collaboration with Spark Chicago, is woven throughout the space to amplify Type of Construction Renovation/Addition
