Gerald R. Ford International Airport - Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting Facility

The new GRR Airport - Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) Facility is strategically located adjacent to the Airport Operations Center on the east side of the airfield to establish a new hub for airport public safety services. This adjacency promotes communication, collaboration, and mutual-aid training with partner agencies to support regional emergency preparedness. The 25,000-square-foot facility is thoughtfully designed to meet the 24/7 demands of the ARFF Team, including five drive-through apparatus bays, living quarters, administrative offices, and a large, multi-agency training space. The new location, high-speed doors, and larger bays improve operational efficiency and response times. The innovative apparatus bay design includes accommodations for ladder, ropes, and confined-space fire-fighter training built into the mezzanine. The facility also includes station alerting technology integrated into audio and lighting systems throughout the facility. Design elements include exterior materials that are durable and easy to maintain, with transom glazing in the apparatus bays to limit the need for artificial lighting. The facility also includes a kitchen, dining, and fitness area with direct access to a roof terrace with unparalleled views of the airfield.
