Overview
The Career Center reimagines an underutilized part of a 1970s era fortress-like school into a modern center for Career and Technical Education. A small addition provides an impactful new entrance to the building. Raising the existing roof structure, skylights, and expansion of existing window openings add needed daylight to the interior that supports 15 training programs. Learning environments are designed with flexibility to support program changes in alignment with community needs and student interests.
The Career Center ingeniously transforms a 1970s fortress-like high school into a state-of-the-art hub for Career and Technical Education. A 2,500 sq ft addition marks a striking new entrance, inviting students from local high schools and the community. Interior and exterior weathered steel panels distinguish the Career Center from the Middle School, highlighting its the unique educational program. Encompassing 77,000 sq ft, the interior overhaul accommodates 15 diverse career training programs, spanning high-bay labs to collaborative classrooms. The design's flexibility caters to evolving community needs and student interests, spanning Electrician, Sustainable Construction, Advanced Manufacturing, Information Technology, Nursing, and Culinary training. Daylight scarcity within the existing masonry structure prompted innovative daylighting solutions. The central Main Street corridor's raised roof captures even north light, while skylights grace the heart of the building—the new central stair—serving as a nexus between floors and encouraging student collaboration. Enlarged second-floor windows offer dual benefits: amplified daylight and panoramic views. Interior glazing throughout showcases varied learning spaces and facilitates access to daylight. This transformation not only revitalizes the learning environment but also exemplifies sustainability and adaptability, breathing new life into an existing structure. The physical asset, the renovation and addition, made the program visible, and now The Career Center stands as a beacon of forward-thinking education and design, fostering collaboration, autonomy, and holistic growth for students.
