Overview
Constructed with steel structural framing, aluminum roofing and siding, and flooded with natural light, this airy barn-like building is located on the Church Campus, Aptos, California. Situated adjacent to Cabrillo Community College, the building acts as an outreach to the students and wider community, with the coffee house and the adaptable performance space welcoming people onto the campus.
The Church campus broke ground in the 1970’s and as part of the Masterplan a College Ministry Building and Café was proposed due to the church’s location adjacent to the Cabrillo College Campus. A half century later we were asked to become the Architect of Record, working closely with the designer of the original campus to complete this element of the masterplan. The purpose of the Coffee House is to provide a space for students to study, for parents of pre and grade school children to gather before and after drop-off at the Church run school, and for the broader community to come onto the campus of the Church. The College Ministry Center is purposed for meetings, bible studies, concerts, art displays and more. Flooded with natural light, the steel barn-like building is situated on a former gravel parking area overlooking the adjacent college campus entrance, and the coffee house opens onto an outdoor seating area with the use of roll-up glass doors. The Ministry Center contains a state-of-the-art audio/visual system for music and speaking presentations. The “Outreach” building has been hugely successful, exceeding the church’s expectations.
