Overview
The ComEd Recreation Center at Jane Addams Park is a first-of-its-kind, 100,000 SF Chicago Park District athletic and community center. Indoor athletic facilities include soccer, lacrosse, running/walking track, multi-use basketball, volleyball, badminton & roller-skating areas. Support spaces include multi-purpose community rooms, lockers, and offices. A colored canopy, glazed reveals, variation in fenestration height, and modulated exterior colors enhance wayfinding and mitigate the size and scale of this large facility.
This first-of-its-kind, 100,000 square foot Park District indoor athletic facility houses indoor soccer, lacrosse, a running track, NCAA basketball, volleyball, badminton & roller skating, multi-purpose community spaces, lockers, offices, and support spaces. Outdoor amenities include turf basketball and soccer fields. The building is sited to maximize open space and access to the exterior playfields to the north, and parking to the east. A colorful metal panel and curtainwall lobby define the entrance and lobby with visual access to the exterior playfields. The scale and visual imposition of the primary soccer / lacrosse space is mitigated through the introduction of glazed reveals, variation in fenestration height, and modulated color in the precast concrete. The building is designed with simple, durable and cost-effective materials that facilitate fast construction. The use of color and supergraphics on the interior of the building provide visual interest and facilitate visual way-finding among the sub-dividable turf fields. The building is located within an existing Planned Development, and required an amendment to the Planned Development with the Department of Planning & Development. The facility is designed for compliance with the City of Chicago Sustainability Policy and is enrolled in the ComEd Energy Efficiency Program, providing operational cost-savings for the Chicago Park District.
