The project begins with an abandoned fast food restaurant. The clients wanted something extraordinary, but contrastingly, the budget required the retention and reuse of all existing areas. The first site visit was indelible. The floors were slippery with a history of cooking oils and optimism was quelled by all observations. The program was simple; an office space for an apparel printing and embroidery manufacturer. The space was to be nearly 50% open office for sales and design staff. The clients, a mother and daughter, wanted the building to convey the creativity and fun of their business and its culture. The design team assured the clients there will be a book written about the experience. It included a meeting which explained to architectural novices the difference of a decorated shed and a duck. The clients wanted more than a renovation to a building that had decades of history as a decorated shed. They wanted to be seen in a building which had a narrative based solely on their business and their successes. The building represents extraordinary women, their business and its brand through architecture that aspires to be more than a decorated shed. Duck?
