JNKA Architects · Barrington, IL
Overview
The design for interior renovations at St. Matthew Lutheran Church addressed the church’s goals to create larger multi-purpose gathering and hospitality spaces that were directly accessible from the Sanctuary, beautify their interior environment to foster improved engagement within the community and with their neighbors, and improve way-finding throughout the church. Additional improvements include renovated restrooms and support spaces, updated mechanical systems, and new finishes throughout.
The design for renovations at St. Matthew Lutheran Church addressed a number of concerns, including outdated aesthetics, a confusing building layout that posed challenges for visitors and the elderly, and an interior environment that no longer reflected the church’s identity. The project’s main areas of focus sought to reflect St. Matthew’s invitational slogan, “Come Gather, Grow, & Go with us”. Gather: Gathering spaces were far from the Sanctuary and lacked signage, making it difficult to welcome guests and people with disabilities. New way-finding was introduced throughout, and to foster better engagement, a series of three larger gathering spaces were provided, directly accessible from the sanctuary. Staff offices were also relocated to be directly visible from the main entrance. Grow: In the Sanctuary, the Choir Loft was expanded, and a new operable glass wall was added below, to create a multi-purpose space serving as overflow seating and a Welcome Center. Pews and flooring were replaced in the Sanctuary, bringing new life to the church where members of St. Matthew’s have grown together since its original construction in 1957. Go: With a refreshed interior that better meets the needs of its members, St. Matthew Lutheran Church is better equipped to reach out to their community and welcome neighbors to gather with them. Additional improvements include renovated restrooms and support spaces, updated mechanical systems, and new finishes throughout.
