Overview
8,500 sf of renovated casual upscale dining and preparation space was created within this historic former A&P Grocery. Conceived as an homage to a 1950’s style supper club, the request was for an inviting, warm, and sophisticated classic yet contemporary dining experience with saturated tones and rich accents. Ultimately, the team was asked to synthesize these multi-layered interests into a unique downtown restaurant which would provide a dining experience unlike any existing in the city.
Exploring several manifestations of mid-century sophistication, our team investigated modern, traditional, and transitional schemes with the restauranteur. Arriving at a gilded art deco, Havana cigar club, bourbon bohemian departure point, elements such as deco Egyptian papyrus fan motifs, textile area rug expressions, and metallic screens create a blend of approachability and refinement. Verticality of the space introduces cleanly detailed column enclosures which reach up to painted structural beams and form a grounding rhythm. An implied upper story, dimensionally aligned with the perimeter clerestory windows, continues the column grid with introduced pilasters and softens the acoustic hardness with lush fabric curtains. Dining and bar spaces are suggested by a golden beaded floor to structure curtain pulling together the rich accents of the large format pixelated floral bar wallcovering backdrop, lighting fixture metallics, and a massive fan repeat covered downlit fireplace hearth feature. A custom solid wood bar terminates the view and flow incorporating classically antiqued mirrors, gold leaf lettering, classical architectural language, and a mix of utilitarian storage and display of curiosities. Booths clad in scarlet leather and velvet merge with wooden low walls which form a series of discreet server stations, dispersed storage, and guest amenities. A pair of fireplaces introduce an inviting element in a contemporary arrangement. Daylight streams in during the lunch hour and is juxtaposed with an internal glow for evening dining.
