This lively articulated four-story-tall senior living facility provides a unique pairing of affordable housing and support services in one location. The design builds on the client's mission “to enhance quality of life and facilitate independence of older adults.” Located near the prominent corner of Howard St. and Ridge Blvd. in Evanston, the building provides 54 one-bedroom and six two-bedroom independent living apartments for seniors age 62 or older, with incomes at or below 60 percent of the area median income. Straightforward planning translates into easy navigation for the facility’s elderly residents. Support services and parking are located on the ground level with three floors of studio, one-, and two-bedroom apartments above. Social activity and fitness rooms face the sidewalk on the first floor, providing a strong connection between the resident’s daily activities and the neighborhood. Above, a predominantly single-loaded corridor places most units facing the vibrant urban activity of Howard Street. The second floor features a lounge and two outdoor patios that are shared by residents and support staff. The building is clad in a white concrete panelized system with brightly painted metal trim and wood surrounds. Nature-inspired accents give the windows a lively expression on the street. Inside, a warm palette of materials and finishes represent common ideals of health, community, and growth to inspire both residents and visitors.
