The Teller House

This important architectural and cultural icon, located in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood, was designed by Marshall & Fox and constructed in 1924 for the Sheridan Trust and Savings Bank. The 14-story building, whose ownership has changed several times throughout its history, is a contributing structure to the Uptown Historic District, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000, and was declared a Chicago Landmark in 2008. The project team repurposed this neighborhood and regional landmark into a vibrant live/work community by repositioning 42,000 SF of retail and commercial office spaces, converting the 21,500 SF historic banking hall to a WeWork co-working space, and building out the upper floors with 176 studio and one-bedroom apartments. The key amenity for the building is a roof terrace and lounge, which we added to an existing mechanical penthouse on the 13th floor roof. The terrace has incredible downtown views and the spacious lounge offers a kitchenette and seating – tenants enjoy working remotely here. Another amenity is a basement gym with lofty ceilings and extensive bike storage. The project was reviewed closely by the National Park Service (NPS). The exterior and interior of the building’s key areas, which include the lobbies, banking hall, and residential corridors, retain their original architectural character as defined by federal standards, while adapting to the building’s new contemporary living and working practices.
