Overview
Working within strict local design covenants, we were interested in defining a nuanced balance between modern and traditional while challenging the locally accepted conventions of "mountain modern." Of the many programmatic requirements of the home, two of the most important were to capitalize on the site’s on-mountain location with ski-in and ski-out capabilities, as well as comfortably host large family gatherings.
In the summer of 2016, a young family approached our office to design a family retreat in Copper Mountain, Colorado. After visiting the site, we immediately discussed with our client our intention to respectfully question the dominant aesthetic language in the neighborhood. Working within strict local design covenants, we were interested in defining a nuanced balance between modern and traditional while challenging the locally accepted conventions of "mountain modern." Referencing the regional historical vernacular lexicon, the material palette in the project is restrained to three elements that will patina gracefully: a stone lower level, vertical spruce siding and bonderized standing seam roofing. Of the many programmatic requirements of the home, two of the most important were to capitalize on the site’s on- mountain location with ski-in and ski-out capabilities, as well as comfortably host large family gatherings. With a main level owner's suite, three upper-level junior suites, a sleeping loft above the vaulted living area (accessed by a ladder tucked behind the fireplace) and two lower level bunk rooms, the home easily accommodates multiple families simultaneously. Après-ski entertainment includes a massive double-sided indoor/outdoor fireplace to provide conversational warmth both inside the family room as well as slope-side. In the lower level, families can enjoy a large theater room, game room and mini-bowling alley.
