Overview
Transformation Christian Church's mission to create an oasis of unity for the community is reinforced by drawing on Unity Temple in Oak Park to create a dominant, recognizable presence. Materials and massing, along with planter walls bring the 100,000 square foot building to a human scale and softens the impact at the pedestrian level and the surrounding neighborhood.
Transformation Christian Church's mission is to bring unity to an economically challenged area of St. Louis by creating a spiritual oasis for worship, fellowship, education and inspiration. Our approach, build on the concept of unity by incorporating elements of Unity Temple in Oak Park to create a dominant, inspiring structure that incorporated all of the program elements while deconstructing large urban mass design. This project features over 3,000 seats, classrooms, a fellowship hall, offices and a prayer garden. We used strong geometric forms and massing to define this building and human scale. The signature Sanctuary dominates the complex and is surrounded by smaller elements that step down to provide human scale at the street level. Using planter walls to screen outdoor patios and courtyards further reduces scale and softens the massing. Clerestory glass allows natural light to enter the Sanctuary and corner glass elements give hints to the interior. Exterior materials and massing indicate the different program functions and blend with the adjacent building materials. All of this to maintain design continuity and connection to the surrounding neighborhood and influence future design.
