The Patricia Browning Stone Sensory Playground

Three i Design · Evansville, IN

Overview

It is essential that ALL children have opportunities to experience a variety of play activities for healthy development. Unfortunately, many have difficulties with sensory processing and are unable to enjoy these experiences. The Patricia Browning Stone Sensory Playground is directly aimed at helping children with sensory, behavioral, and emotional challenges. Children receive “therapy through play” as therapists observe, evaluate, and play alongside the child to address social, motor, and cognitive issues connected with sensory disorders.

It is essential that ALL children have opportunities to experience a wide variety of play activities for healthy development. Unfortunately, many children have difficulties with sensory processing and are therefore unable to enjoy these experiences. The Patricia Browning Stone Sensory Playground is directly aimed at helping children with sensory, behavioral, and emotional challenges. This playground offers children with sensory processing disorders many opportunities for play. Each piece of equipment is specifically designed to offer a wide range of sensory-rich experiences. Children receive “therapy through play” as therapists observe, evaluate, and play alongside the child to address social, motor, and cognitive issues connected with sensory disorders. In order to be completely successful, the building containing the sensory playground equipment would need to be as equally sensory engaging. The 5,090 square foot interior and 2,364 square foot exterior playgrounds were completed in November 2018 with a final construction cost of 1.9 million dollars and an overall project cost of 2.5 million dollars.
