Holy Family Catholic Church serves one of the largest parishes in Rockford, Illinois. As the result of a long-range planning effort, Holy Family arrived at the decision to create a new addition to the aging 1970s church building and provide important upgrades to improve the overall quality of spaces available to parish members for worship and fellowship. The addition included an expansion to the narthex complete with new clerestory windows, seating and a custom baptismal font. Original artwork is featured in the narthex, providing a clear focal point on the processional to the sanctuary. Also on the main floor, adjacent to the narthex, is the new fellowship hall and kitchen, multi-purpose room, and expanded, updated restrooms. The sanctuary received additional and more efficient lighting, dramatically transforming the space. Updated flooring materials were specified to enhance the processional into the sanctuary and highlight the chancel. A relocated crucifix now hangs directly above a beautifully crafted altar. The addition ties into the existing church with economical brick clad precast panels. Stone materials frame the entry doors and provide a new sense of scale and presence previously lacking in the original church. New drive-up canopies provide a welcoming gesture to a reconfigured parking lot and improve the ease of use of the drop-off and pick-up areas in front of the church.
