Vienna Police Headquarters

The Police Headquarters is a 29,400 square foot LEED Silver© certified redevelopment of the existing headquarters site. The new building integrates all police functions into a single facility while prioritizing sustainability, wellness, and community. The project team used the design process as an opportunity to engage the community to collectively redefine policing for the town. This project was created to be a transformative space within the community, focused on the idea of community policing, which was central to the building’s organization, program, and design. The building exterior was designed to match its surroundings. The facades matched contextual proportions and used vernacular materials, like brick, stone, and siding. The site was designed around transparency and future sustainable growth, while maintaining a high-level security. Health and wellness features and spaces were incorporated into the building to encourage active and healthy occupants. Staff spaces were designed to alleviate stress and allow for decompression of employees after tense work situations, mitigating the risk of carrying that stress into their encounters with the public. Interior community spaces provided a sense of place for the public within the building. The building was designed with a high level of survivability in an emergency event. By activating the police station and its site as a community space for the public, the project provides a tangible benefit for community members.
