Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Station 2

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, Station 2, completed in October 2023, is a state-of-the-art facility designed to replace an outdated predecessor. Spanning approximately 18,000 square feet, this modern station accommodates full-time police and firefighter personnel with three drive-through apparatus bays, ample gear storage, living quarters, a multi-purpose training and community room, and a storm shelter. Strategically located within a residential neighborhood southwest of downtown, the station integrates public safety services seamlessly into the community, enhancing neighborhood infrastructure with new sidewalks, improved parking, upgraded lighting, and the development of an adjacent park. Committed to sustainability, the facility features a green roof for energy efficiency and stormwater management, solar panels on the carport, high-efficiency mechanical systems, and electric vehicle charging stations. The use of low-VOC and locally sourced materials further underscores its environmental stewardship. Currently applying for LEED Certification, the project reflects Kalamazoo’s dedication to sustainable design and construction. Despite challenges from the global pandemic, the project was completed on schedule, showcasing the collaborative efforts of city officials, architects, engineers, and construction teams. Station 2 stands as a beacon of progress, enhancing emergency response capabilities and strengthening community bonds.
