Prairie Remnant House

Designed to preserve the past, Prairie Remnant House is a thoughtful, modern structure carefully sited on an original homestead foundation to continue a legacy of prairie conservancy. The carefully considered plan maintains the original homestead foundation while expanding to meet the couple’s familial and stewardship needs. Approximately 200-sq.ft. was added to the north connecting the existing house to the existing garage. Covered formal and informal entryways punctuate the entry sequence. The first level prioritizes primary sleeping quarters and flexible entertaining space. The open kitchen and dining area is scaled to regularly suit six to eight people but can accommodate up to 20. A feature fireplace is a focal point for large groups and when arranged as a reading nook for the couple. A great room expands the entertaining options and includes a wood-burning stove. The plan was designed to support spatial separations for security and energy efficiency. Conservancy visitors and volunteers have exterior access to a mudroom and bathroom which can be locked off from the general living areas. A sliding door was integrated to close off access to the second level in order to further reduce energy consumption during the winter months. The second level provides one large bathroom and three guest suites—two bedrooms with queen beds and one bunk room. The second level also features an observation loft with picturesque prairie views.
